Motcombe Parish Council

A Meeting of the Parish Council was held on Tuesday 8th July 2008.
The following were some of the points discussed:

  • New Name for 18 Acres – Following the recent village poll on re-naming this area.  MOTCOMBE MEADOWS appeared a clear favourite.  The Council therefore voted that from henceforth – this would be the area’s new name.
  • Allotments – It was decided that, as the matter of initiating allotments locally was a very complex one, further investigations would be ongoing before decisions could be made as to their location and how they should be administered.
  • Traffic Accidents on Turnpike/Shaftesbury Road Junction – Attention has been given to this area by the Highways Authority and it is hoped that considerable benefits will be experienced.  In the meantime, the residents of Turnpike Kennels, expressed themselves gratified at the result of representations and will be keeping a close eye on developments.
  • Play Area Facilities Group – The Council was presented with at proposal for the use of Play Equipment Funds from Bloors by Cllrs Tucker and Odell.  In it they recommended that a sum of £750 should be given annually to each of the voluntary organisations in the village which already provided facilities for young people, in order to provide them with some much needed financial support. The Council unanimously agreed to this Plan - which will shortly be implemented.

Please note that displaying these points in no way prejudices the fact that the Minutes cannot be published until approved at the next Meeting of the Parish Council.

Flood Preparation in Motcombe PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 July 2008 14:00

Bearing in mind the recent torrential rainfall that has beset our part of Dorset, followed by the presence of the Fire Brigade to try and alleviate the resulting floods, the Parish Council Clerk Jane Jones has made great efforts to discover who and how to make contact in the event of problems. These are her findings, provided for everybodys reference:

"I could not find any particular records from the past about this - so have been in touch with both Wessex Water ... and the Environment Agency.

It appears that whilst Wessex Water do have some responsibilities - the main ones rest with the Environment Agency which approved building on flood plains in the first place!  I have discovered that it is possible to ring Flood Warnings Direct on 0845 988 1188 to subscribe to a 'warning service' if you recognise your property might be vulnerable.  I had imagined that the area might be 'assessed' and information given - along with practical things like sandbags etc - but it's not like that.  It is up to the householder to seek information and then purchase what they might need themselves.

To access the main pool of information/advice/contacts www.environment-agency.gov.uk under 'flooding' is the place to look.  As I think I mentioned on the phone, Wessex Water 'Floodline' on 0845 85 05959 and WW 'Emergency' is 0845 600 4600 - should the problems be to do with drains overflowing etc."
